Ugandi Resto has been part of the story of Otepää for more than 24 years. We bring together Nordic flavors and the Mediterranean philosophy of cooking – two different food cultures united by respect for ingredients, time, and togetherness. We offer a dining experience that is at once rich in flavor, balanced, and naturally enjoyable.

In our kitchen, flavors are created from the inspiration of Nordic nature and the lightness and herbs of Mediterranean cuisine. Head Chef Silver Illak creates dishes in which the purity of local nature meets the aromatic nuances and long traditions of the Mediterranean. The result is food that is not accidental, but thoughtful and full of character – simple in essence, yet layered in flavor.

Due to the harsh Nordic climate and nature, the traditional foods of this region have historically been rather hearty and warming. Many of the flavors typical of this area developed from the need to help people endure the winter months. Mediterranean cuisine, on the other hand, is known for its lighter, more flavorful, and healthier choices, focusing on fresh and clean ingredients.

We enjoy using meat products characteristic of Nordic cuisine together with the gifts of local forests. The rich spices and herbs of the Mediterranean are a natural part of our dishes. We use fresh and clean ingredients, while also valuing old skills such as fermentation, which has been an integral part of food culture for thousands of years. Our menu includes Nordic soups, Mediterranean-style salads, tapas inspired by Spain, and Italian-style pizzas and pastas.

The use of local ingredients is at the heart of our dishes. Close ties with nearby farms and gardens allow us to offer meals that reflect the authenticity and seasonality of Estonian nature. Preferring local ingredients supports the community and helps reduce our ecological footprint. For example, our organic lamb comes from Ala-Mähkli Farm in Karula National Park, where special attention is paid to animal welfare and meat quality. We are one of the few restaurants in Estonia where the whole lamb is valued – we do all the necessary cuts on site ourselves and follow a zero-waste principle.

Ugandi Resto is a leisure restaurant where good food, pleasant service, and tasteful interior design come together. For us, an essential part of food culture is enjoying meals together with family and friends. Mediterranean joie de vivre and Nordic practicality create an environment where it feels good to be and where people want to return.

The restaurant’s name comes from one of the wealthiest counties of ancient Estonia, Ugandi, whose center was Otepää. This history is important to us and is also reflected in the restaurant’s interior, which connects the rich past of the region with present-day Otepää. The second floor of Ugandi Resto is also known as the room of the Estonian flag. Otepää is the cradle of the Estonian blue-black-white flag, and out of respect the entire floor is dedicated to the national flag and its story.

During the warmer season, guests can enjoy Ugandi Resto’s summer garden, the largest in Otepää, with space for up to 150 people and immediate closeness to the surrounding nature. The second-floor terrace, which accommodates up to 80 guests, offers beautiful views of Otepää’s central square, the historic Linnamägi hill, and the church.

Ugandi Resto is a three-time winner of the Silverspoon 2024 gastronomy competition, rated as a very high-level restaurant by the Falstaff restaurant guide, and recognized with the gold label of the Estonian Association of Large Families. We are a member of the Estonian Hotel and Restaurant Association and have also received the silver badge “Supporter of National Defence” from the Ministry of Defence.
